Poker Concepts

Anna Kournikova – a term used to describe a hand that seems good at first glance but later on proves to be nothing; it looks pretty, in other words, but that’s all there really is to it.

Bet – an action that requires placing a certain amount of money to indicate that you’re still willing to go to the next round.

Big Blind – this is the name used to refer to the bet that the person two seats after the dealer would post.

Calling Station – term used to refer to newbies or first-time poker players.

Dealer – this refers to the player with the button of dealer placed in his position and shall be the last person to act in each round.

Maniac – A term used to describe a certain type of poker player; a maniac is just what his name implies he is, never stopping in whatever he’s bent on doing, even if it’s against common sense and logic to continue. A maniac is a bully on the poker table, fearless when it comes to matching bet after bet and prone to bluff at all rounds of poker. If you’re playing against a maniac, if he’s in the mood to bluff and inclined to raise the stakes to unbelievable proportions, don’t by all means take the bait because that would just be to your disadvantage. Nor should you try bluffing against a maniac because he will never let you win through bluffing.

Mouse – A term used to describe a certain type of poker player. A mouse never plays against odds and even with the best of cards, may still be forced to fold if he believes that any of his opponents has an even better poker hand than his. If a mouse becomes aggressive when it comes to betting, this is a good indication that he has a very good poker hand so you could opt to fold if you’re not comfortable with the card you’re holding. A mouse is usually easily fooled by poker players good at bluffing.

Rounder – a term used to describe a certain type of player; if you’re described by other poker players that you’re a rounder then rejoice because that means they think highly of your skills in poker.

Small Blind – this is the name used to refer to the bet that the person right next to the dealer would post and is half of the amount of the big blind.

Texas Hold’Em Poker – this refers to a version of Poker that is played by more or less ten players.
