Casino's Earnings Out of Poker

When hosting a game of poker, the casino or the gambling house must earn so that it can continue its services for the poker players. Hosting a poker game, after all, is a not a philanthropic activity. It is a business that must be maintained. But how exactly does a casino earn profits?

There are two known ways. One is called the "rake" and the other is a simple charge for the use of the poker table. The casino utilizes either of the two depending on the type of poker game being played on the table.

The rake refers to a certain percentage of the pot which is due to the house. The rake is taken out of pots when players are holding low-limit poker games. Usually, low-limits poker games have limits between $5 to $10 only. Since the poker games have low limits only, the house takes about 5% of the pot per game. That is, if the pot contains $60, the rake that goes to the house is $3.

However, there are limits to the rake that the house gets from one poker game. In many casinos, the limit is up to $5. After each round in one poker game, the dealer takes a portion of money out of the pot and sets it aside in one plastic circle to his right.

In higher-limit games, the casino foregoes the rake and earns in a different way. Instead of the rake, the casino charges the players for the time they spend on the poker table. The reason for replacing the rake is for the advantage of the poker players. In higher-limits or no-limits game, the poker player need not worry and deduct a certain percentage of his bets that will go to the house.

Despite the certain amount of money that goes to the casino, winning in a poker game is still profitable. Some seasoned poker players admit that the rake is actually insignificant when compared to their winnings. But such implies that to make a poker game profitable, the poker player must not only have more money but he must be able to beat the rake.

Aside from the rake or the charge for the use of the poker table, there is another expense that the poker player must think of. This expense refers to the tip that is customarily given to the player each time a poker player wins. The usual tip is just $1. But the poker player must keep in mind that he is not required to give a tip.
